Background: The present-day society is influenced by artificial intelligence (AI), as it adapts human intellect and can imitate tasks such as the intricacies of decision-making. However, there may be factors that influence the integration of AI, which are still being explored and show great potential in contributing to healthcare development. This study described nurses’ literacy, anxiety, and general attitudes toward AI and determined the relationship among these variables in Angeles City, Mabalacat City, and the City of San Fernando, Pampanga. Examining the relationship between these variables is essential in understanding whether nurses are willing to integrate AI into nursing practice.
Methods: A descriptive-correlational design was employed involving 496 nurses from both government and private hospitals. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, and data collection was conducted following ethical clearance. Three validated instruments were utilized: the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale (AILS), the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (AIAS), and the General Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS). Descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were applied using SPSS Statistics version 26. The study underwent a plagiarism scan to ensure its originality and integrity.
Results: AI literacy had an overall mean of 4.60 [standard deviation (SD) =0.71] and scored highest in the evaluation and ethics subdomains. AI anxiety had a mean of 4.32 (SD =1.12), with significant concerns related to sociotechnical blindness and job replacement. General attitudes toward AI were slightly favorable with a mean score of 3.04 (SD =0.45), with nurses acknowledging its potential. Spearman’s correlation showed a significant positive relationship between AI literacy and general attitudes (ρ=0.225, P<0.001), and between AI anxiety and general attitudes (ρ=0.137, P=0.002). No significant correlation was found between AI literacy and anxiety (ρ=0.009, P=0.85).
Conclusions: The findings suggest that increased literacy contributes to more favorable attitudes, but anxiety can stem from deeper, unresolved uncertainties. Meanwhile, AI anxiety does not significantly influence AI literacy. These results highlight the importance of targeted educational interventions and support programs to enhance nurses’ confidence and readiness in integrating AI into clinical practice.
